This 3M 06085 Perfect-It Rubbing Compound truly is a miracle worker. I had recently painted a car and when finished I still had some horrible over spray and some orange peel. I was really bummed until I did some research and discovered using a 3000 grit sandpaper followed up with the 3M 06085 will remove ALL defects. It absolutely did remove ALL the over spray and made the orange peel invisible. I really could not believe my eyes seeing the very smooth and shiny outcome for a rubbing compound. It actually performs more like a professional polish because the finish is so smooth.
Like others have mentioned this stuff can be used on other tasks as well. Works real well on plastic headlight restoration as well.
It might seem expensive but I went over a 93 T-Bird twice and still only used 16 oz. For what it accomplished I would pay double the price, but don't tell 3M...:)
Update: 9-29-14
I realize I forgot to mention one should definitely use the 3M 05723 8" Foam Compounding Pad along with a 8" rotary buffer/sander. The correct pad and rotary speed really are fairly critical for the proper end result.

Using this product to buff out 2000 grit wet sand scratches. Works like a charm! Mirror finish after using 2000 grit paper, then this product, then using Maguires was product
The best cutting compound on the market in my view. While it's not cheap, remember that you're getting 16 ounces in a barrel shaped container that doesn't constantly fall over. The compound itself is outstanding and represents 3M's best. This is what the pros use, folks!
Bought this and level 2, car came out great use this after painting the car in the garage.
The 3M 39060, Perfect It Rubbing Compound is advertised to be able to handle P1200 grit and finer scratches. In reality, it only starts work really well with P2500 grit sanding or more. Otherwise, it takes a good deal of buffing time to clear up the surface.
I just recently tried this product the rub-out the clear coat finish on the hood of my '72 Camaro that I painted two years ago. The surface integrity was smooth and had factory grade orange peel. I color-sanded from P1000 to P2000 grit. In comparison to the standard 3M compound I've used for years, this stuff required a bit more buffer time (using a DeWALT DWP849) to get the shine. For this type of work, I still prefer good ole 3M Super Duty Compound.

3M Compounds have been my go to for a decade or so now. I use them whenever I need a high gloss finish. Currently, I use this most often for polishing hand made wood pens that I turn on a lathe and finish with CA glue. The glue provides a durable finish and after wet sanding to 2000 grit, I follow up with this and a finer polish as well. The results are always outstanding and I know that I'm getting a great product with the 3M Perfect-It line.
I was driving through a construction zone and had a traffic cone kicked out in front of me, that left a HUGE orange rub mark on the bumper of my white Mazda. After a couple of drops of this stuff and a buffing pad hooked up to drill the mark was gone without a trace! This stuff is a little expensive but it's worth it because it actually works!
What an easy to use a compound that removes the majority of imperfections. I used this car that was painted in the homeowner's Garage that fortunately had many coats so I was able to wet sand off a couple of coats past all the orange peel and dirt. Then used this compound and the results were stunning! the darn car looks like it has a 6K paint job now! If you follow the instructions and I suggest a wool bonnet you will not be disappointed.
Removes swirl marks even on glossy black paint. I've used this compound for over 5 years and 3M is consistent quality. Other rubbing compounds I've used sometimes separate in the bottle or produce uneven results. Works equal well with a rotary buffer or hand buffing. Does have a slight petroleum kerosene odor. Very easy to buff to a shine.
Great product, but not for an amateur. This is pro-grade rubbing compound, so i would recommend this to the novice-professional crowd. You can damage your finish if you don't know what you're doing. I would first use this product on a test area or a finish that's not on the car (random bumper or body panel you have lying around) to get the hang of it first.
